SPX40’s For New Sonic Drilling | ||
![]() | A cutting-edge mine in Little Falls, MN was looking for a innovative pump to move abrasive mud, for drill cooling/lubrication, and Bentonite (grout), to fill well holes after drilling. After reviewing several different types of pumps the plant decided on a Bredel SPX40 hose pump for the application. The hose pump is used in the “minisonic” driller application. The mine uses sonic drilling, which provides highly representative, continuous core samples of any overburdened formation. Even the most-difficult-to-drill terrain can be handled with sonic drilling, generally without the use of water, air or mud. Unlike progressive cavity or diaphragm pumps, the Bredel SPX hose pump is not adversely affected by the abrasive slurries. Since the pump’s rotor never comes in contact with the slurry, the hose is the only wearing part. Also the SPX hose pump has no seals to flush, alleviating the need for water to be added to the process. The company was so pleased with the excellent performance of the pump they have purchased several additional SPX pumps and now standardise a Bredel SPX pump for all their drill rigs.
